The War
Just months ago it was unthinkable a war would erupt in Europe. We were living in a nirvana, busy with inventing apps and services which make it more convenient to have a lunch delivered or make it more entertaining to chat with each other bu using new emoticons.
We must remember one thing: mad leaders do not act alone. They are always surrounded by a group looking to benefit from the mad man's actions. This was exactly the case before the WWII. The top industrialists who benefited from WWI (despite Germany losing it) were looking to benefit even more from a next war.
I've been going through the discussions on sanctions against Russia and the business angle is very present there. Germany wants to keep buying more natural gas from Russia. Italy wants to be exempt to continue selling luxury goods to Russia. Belgium wants to be able to continue selling diamonds. Sporting events continue to host Russian players and teams. Don't get me wrong, I do not have anything against these individuals. It is just that if they officially represent a country which has invaded another country, they should not be allowed on international high profile sporting events.
The sad thing is, we have failed getting truly together. I believe with a strong united global action this war could have had been stopped already. Unfortunately getting truly united means for many of us stepping out of the comfort zone and for some giving up some profits. And clearly, as a global society. we are not ready for this.
