Truly Wireless

Image
The Silvair Control is what I call a truly wireless device.  By that I mean there is no power string attached. Batteries are the everyday nightmare. We live with them and we hate them. Working hard to charge them every night just to reach the "low" status in the afternoon on the next day. Our wireless freedom's life is so short. In my preparation for a short vacation in Africa, organizing car chargers and spare batteries for SLRs, tablets, satellite / GPS locators, headlamps etc has kept me really busy. I dream of a phone that lasts a week. Or a smart watch that lasts a month. Or a camera that I charge once before the vacation and never worry it will run out of juice. And no, I don't drive a Tesla, but I feel those who do. In the light of the above mentioned experiences, a wireless product that lasts a year on a coin cell is a breakthrough. And how about 3 years? Or 5? Or 9? Depending on the configuration, we managed to get the power consumption down to 9uA on aver...

User Experience

Image
After the extremely successful Bluetooth World event , I'm on the way to China to discuss the manufacturing details with our CMs. It is a joy being able to push the envelope on the design front (new form factors and functions) and then carving the real product in high volumes. At Bluetooth World we launched Silvair , which I blogged on briefly last week. Our booth was filled with our partner's products with our technology inside. It shapes to be very complete from the start and offers great benefits to all member companies, as the products from different vendors are compatible with each other by design and offer huge up-sell opportunities. But the biggest announcement has been the launch of the Silvair Control . The product has been in development for more than a year and is based on our thorough research we've been doing since the company was founded. Two years ago we joined forces with Design Partners to create a complete line of next generation smart products and t...

Introducing Silvair

Image
Today we're introducing Silvair . The complete environment for manufacturers. Empowering them to build cutting edge smart / connected products. Silvair is a product of our multi-year engagement with our customers. We've learned and realized the challenges they have. They used to make their products. Strong, solid, functional. Made of metal, glass, plastics. Then the new era has dawned. The era of software - defined, connected, smart products. Initially they thought the only ingredient they needed to add was sand - a small silicon chip. Then they realized the silicon was only the ingredient to start with. And they needed so much more. Almost all products today are software products. Take a car engine, the extreme example. What it is today is defined by software. The horse-power, the mile-per-gallon, how it starts, how it sounds, how it takes care of itself, how it operates. Remove the software and it is dead. A heap of dead metal. The same applies to almost every product c...

Tamron 15-30mm Lens

Image
Reporting from the photography department, I am very enthusiastic about the new Tamron wide angle zoom (the SP 15-30MM F/2.8 Di VC USD ). Just to note how disruptive the times we live in are... Tamron, the "economy" brand has introduced yet another lens that outperforms much more expensive Nikon or Canon siblings. The lens is extremely solid and delivers optically. I like the vibration compensation. Yest it is a great addition to a wide angle lens - you can take 1 second photos handheld. Think capturing any type of motion - flowing water or falling snow without a tripod. Also when stopped down in less-than-perfect light, for more depth of field, you don't need to crank up ISO to 6400 or more... At the same time the 15mm focal length paired with f/2.8 aperture and extremely well controlled coma, makes it a great candidate for night sky photography. The lens is demanding. I mean the wide angle is demanding. I'm just learning the composition rules for ultra wide ...
