Minimal Travel Power

Minimizing the bulk and weight of electronic gadgets on the go is an everlasting challenge. As time goes by, things get more compact and there are standards like USB which definitely help. Today, in 2024, everything is so much more streamlined compared to what it was back in 2008 - see my blog back then: https://headworx.slupik.com/2009/06/so-what-is-in-my-holiday-gadget-bag.html. Also things are different depending if you carry a laptop with you or not.

But if it is just a phone and some accessories like headphones (I love the open-ear bone conducting ones), a smart watch (Garmin in my case), an emergency satellite messenger (Garmin too), you can get a set of  charging accessories down to a very small package.

Here is my recent one - at 182 grams including compatibility with just about all wall sockets globally and an emergency power bank.

  1. Universal dual port USB-C + USB-A 20W charger. While not the most powerful, it is just fine to charge small devices, and at just 60g has built-in wizardry of interchangeable prongs to fit any wall socket globally. You may wonder why I like the USB-A port? Well, there are USB-C devices which do not implement the USB Power Delivery (PD) standard properly and they will not charge from a USB-C port, requiring a USB-A - to - USB-C cable instead. Also should your cable break or get lost, finding a C-C cable in a rural village somewhere at the end of the world may be difficult.
  2. Nitecore NL2150RX battery. Has a USB-C bi-directional port so can serve as a power bank. Rated at 5000mAh charges my iPhone 15 Pro to 70% which is pretty good - you get 1% of charge for 1g of the weight. Probably the best ratio for a power bank.
  3. USB-C to 2xUSB-C + microUSB cable. allows charging multiple devices (a phone, a power bank, a watch) simultaneously. Great if you just want to recharge everything overnight without waking up and swapping things around.
  4. USB-C to microUSB adapter. For older devices like Garmin inReach mini.
  5. USB-C to Garmin watch adapter. Self explanatory.
  6. USB-C to Shokz headset. All three adapters are needed for devices not supporting directly the USB-C plug, but they are really tiny. The only inconvenience is you may just lose them...
  7. USB-A to USB-C adapter. Either to convert the charger's "A" port to "C" or use on an aircraft, as only the newest ones offer the USB-C option
  8. Apple C-to-C 1m cable. Good length for aircraft or car use. Of course does not need to be genuine Apple, but this one is one of the slimmest / lightest. And good quality of course.

  1. My family are all successful professionals for whom it is hard to buy presents that are actually wanted, as they usually get things if they want/need them right away. I have given the Nitecore battery plus the ASOMETECH-USB Charger to four family members and they are all delighted. It's thanks to Szymon's blog that I find out about cool things from time to time.
